buzzle.com — There is a small bottle containing a red fluid on a shelf in Sheffield University’s microbiology laboratory. The liquid looks cloudy and uninteresting. Yet, if one group of scientists is correct, the phial contains the first samples of extraterrestrial life isolated by researchers. Inside the bottle are samples left over from one of the strangest incidents in recent meteorological history. On 25 July, 2001, blood-red rain fell over the Kerala district of western India. And these rain bursts continued for the next two months. All along the coast it rained crimson, turning local people’s clothes pink, burning leaves on trees and falling as scarlet sheets at some points. Investigations suggested the rain was red because winds had swept up dust from Arabia and dumped it on Kerala. But Godfrey Louis, a physicist at Mahatma Gandhi University in Kottayam, after gathering samples left over from the rains, concluded this was nonsense. ‘If you look at these particles under a microscope, you can see they are not dust, they have a clear biological appearance.’ Instead Louis decided that the rain was made up of bacteria-like material that had been swept to Earth from a passing comet. In short, it rained aliens over India during the summer of 2001. Not everyone is convinced by the idea, of course. Indeed most researchers think it is highly dubious. One scientist who posted a message on Louis’s website described it as ‘bullshit’. But a few researchers believe Louis may be on to something and are following up his work. Milton Wainwright, a microbiologist at Sheffield, is now testing samples of Kerala’s red rain. ‘It is too early to say what’s in the phial,’ he said. ‘But it is certainly not dust. Nor is there any DNA there, but then alien bacteria would not necessarily contain DNA.’ Critical to Louis’s theory is the length of time the red rain fell on Kerala. Two months is too long for it to have been wind-borne dust, he says. In addition, one analysis showed the particles were 50 per cent carbon, 45 per cent oxygen with traces of sodium and iron: consistent with biological material. Louis also discovered that, hours before the first red rain fell, there was a loud sonic boom that shook houses in Kerala. Only an incoming meteorite could have triggered such a blast, he claims. This had broken from a passing comet and shot towards the coast, shedding microbes as it travelled. These then mixed with clouds and fell with the rain. Many scientists accept that com read more...

buzzle.com — Scientists are finalizing plans to link radio wave detectors in five countries and create a device sensitive enough to pick up signals from worlds the other side of the galaxy. By connecting banks of detectors in fields across Britain, France, Holland, Sweden and Germany, astronomers aim to create a radio telescope that will have the accuracy of a machine the size of Europe. They believe it could solve some of the universe's most important secrets - including the discovery of radio broadcasts from intelligent extraterrestrials. 'This system works by collecting radio waves over a range of frequencies,' said cosmologist Robert Nichol of Portsmouth University. 'These can then be analyzed using arrays of computers which can identify patterns from the data streaming from our detectors. 'Some of these signals will reveal information about the early universe, for example. However, broadcasts by alien intelligences would also be revealed by our computers because we will, primarily, be collecting radio signals. Signals that have regular patterns will give themselves away as the possible handiwork of extraterrestrials. Such work is a bonus, however. The main work of the system is basic research,' added Nichol. The project - known as Lofar (low frequency array) - was launched in Holland several years ago, but has attracted the attention of other European astronomers. All have agreed to build their own banks of detectors, which can then be linked to those in Holland. Britain is committed to building one set, while requests for money for another three have been put to research councils. Several sites for Britain's first array are being considered, although most scientists expect it to be built at Jodrell Bank in Cheshire, where the giant radio dish is threatened with closure because of funding cuts. By building the Lofar antenna, which represents the future of radio astronomy, ground-breaking research can continue at the site, say scientists. Lofar arrays exploit the fact that metals pick up radio waves and convert them into weak electric signals. In the past, dishes were pointed at heavenly objects so that their radio waves could be focused on a central receiver and generate a signal strong enough to be analyzed. Lofar uses a very different approach. 'Instead of moving a huge dish around the sky and pointing it at a star or galaxy or nebula, you simply cover a field with sheets of metal. The metal will pick up radio waves from all over the sky,' s read more...

buzzle.com — Aliens have often been in the news. They have always been surrounded by mystery and interest of people all around the world. People have claimed to have been abducted by aliens. Some have claimed to have actually seen them. You might find it interesting to browse through some alien abduction stories. But there has been no conclusive evidence for the idea that aliens exist. Is there a proof that aliens are real? Aliens sightings have mostly involved sights of ape-like creatures or humanoid figures seen in the dark. At times, people have found blood or hair at the locations where aliens were sighted. But there is a high probability that these sightings were of bears or apes. Possibly, people mistook bears or apes as aliens. Alien sightings could have probably been a result of human imagination accompanied by fear. Media has always portrayed aliens as having humanoid figures traveling in disk-shaped vehicles. Aliens have since long been depicted in films. The media image of aliens has perhaps stressed in the minds of the common masses. It makes them believe in the reality of aliens. Aliens portrayed in literature have always influenced young minds. But has media been able to produce a proof of alien existence? Probably, not! Aliens sightings have mostly been accompanied by sightings of light in the night sky. People who claim to have seen aliens have claimed to have seen mysterious lights in the sky. Some of them have also believed that the lights came from the spaceships used by the aliens. Disk-like objects traveling across the sky have often been taken as aliens’ vehicles. People have seen certain unidentified objects floating in the sky and called them aliens. Researchers say that some of these sightings might have been a result of certain astronomical phenomena. Unless, the aliens come to Earth and interact with us, we may not be able to say for sure that aliens are real. Don’t you think so? read more...

buzzle.com — Imagine you are driving in a lone desert and you spotted a huge bright disc shaped UFO (Unidentified Flying Object) landing ahead and the next moment, you saw tiny little creatures stepping out. What will be your reaction? According to science fiction, aliens are extraterrestrial creatures from other planets having humanoid or reptilian characters. Since there are evidences of the presence of water on some of the planets, there are possibilities of life on those planets. Thus, the argument is "extraterrestrial life exists". There are also abduction stories where many people reported to have been abducted by the aliens. Reports are taken from abductees and eyewitnesses in a hypnotized state. However, eyewitness reports are not solid to prove the existence of aliens. Some believe that aliens have existed long time back and they built the "Pyramids of Egypt". Thus, it is a big question "whether aliens actually exist or not" and the answer is left to everybody Types of Aliens It is a common belief that aliens have bigger heads and are quadruped. Let us see some of the types of aliens based on reports shared by people who claim to have a close encounter with the so-called "aliens". Grey Aliens (Zeta) - Grey aliens have various subtypes depending upon their subtype and the services that they provide. Altogether, they are commonly known as "greys". These are the aliens who abducted Betty and Barney Hill in 1961. According to the eyewitnesses, they are amphibians and look like created clones. They are 3.5-4.5 feet tall with dark grey skin. They have large head with no hair and are supported by a thin neck. Greys have huge black "wraparound" eyes, nose may be present or absent based on the subtype. Their hands are long enough to reach down to the knees but comparatively their legs are shorter. They all have reduced body structures. Many abductees reported that they are emotionless and feed on human and animal fluid. Reptilians (Reptoids) - Reptilians are highly advanced creatures similar to reptiles on earth. Many abductees reported that reptoids are cruel and dangerous to human beings. They are similar to the greys in size and stature but are more frightening than the greys. Their head is conical in shape; some have hair, while others have scales. They also have an undersized tail. The leader of the reptilians is known as "draco" and it is believed that they have special wings. According to the abductees, they want to have control over human beings read more...

buzzle.com — Alien astronomers on other planets almost certainly have Earth listed as a world teeming with life, a leading scientist claimed today. Earth observers are probably no more than 20 years away from identifying distant planets on which life exists, and it is likely that putative space civilisations have already come to the same conclusion about Earth, said Dr Roger Angel of the University of Arizona in Texas. At America's biggest science conference in Boston, Massachusetts, he said that Earth had been sending a strong signal into space announcing the existence of life for at least a billion years, because of the presence of oxygen in its atmosphere. "I'm convinced that if there were aliens with technology a bit more advanced than ours they would know that there's life on this planet," Dr Angel told the American Association for the Advancement of Science. "Our own Earth has been putting out a signal for the last billion years which says 'we're here'." Different physical elements create specific signatures imprinted in light which can be identified when light is divided into its constituent colours. Astronomers know that any planet whose reflected light contains a strong oxygen signal is virtually guaranteed to support life. Other signatures that suggest life are water, carbon dioxide, ozone, methane, nitrous oxide and chlorophyll. At present the only way to detect planets outside our solar system is indirectly, by measuring the gravitational effect they have on their parent stars. About 100 giant Jupiter-like planets have been found so far using this method. To find small rocky planets such as the Earth and examine their atmospheres requires technology capable of separating their light from the dazzling rays of the stars they orbit. Two new space telescopes with this ability - one American and the other European - are due to be launched in about 15 years. The European Space Agency's Darwin telescope and Nasa's Terrestrial Planet Finder will for the first time allow astronomers to look for the tell-tale signs of life among the stars. Using a method of "cancelling out" the overspill of starlight, they will be able to separate and capture reflected light from Earth-like planets. Dr Wesley Traub, from the Harvard-Smithsonian Centre for Astrophysics, said: "You'd see the planet as a blob, but from that blob you can learn a lot. If it looks too bright it would probably be like Jupiter, but if you see a dim spot of light then read more...

buzzle.com — Aliens have always aroused the interest for many. With new discoveries in astronomy, man has been able to explore the extraterrestrial world and examine the chances of the existence of aliens. On one hand, the existence of extraterrestrial life is considered hypothetical while on the other hand, aliens have been sighted on a few occasions. There have been news about the aliens visiting Earth; there have been some people claiming to have seen the aliens. The concept of ‘aliens’ remains alien! The sightings of aliens have brought about descriptions of their appearance. What they look like, has been a question in the minds of one and all and news have many a time answered it by giving accounts of people witnessing aliens. We know of films and television shows, which have depicted aliens as being humanoid in appearance. Many renowned poets have written about aliens as a life form beyond this world. Fiction has portrayed aliens as being intruders and unfriendly beings. In general the popular culture has depicted aliens as having some strange and mystic powers. These portrayals have largely influenced common man's ideas about how aliens look. What do Aliens Look Like? Aliens are largely described as resembling human beings. Their height is approximately same as the average height of human beings. Like any normal human beings, aliens have a pair of eyes, a nose, a mouth, a pair of arms and a pair of feet. There are citations of aliens having wings or wheels instead of feet and other such abnormalities. It is believed that aliens have a rough lizard-like skin. Their skin colors are believed to vary from gray, white, tan to gold, pink or red. Their skin is believed to glow in the dark. Their eyes are considered to resemble those of humans, lizards or insects. Some have documented aliens as having webbed fingers while others believe that aliens have suction cups for fingertips or claws. Aliens have been documented as being variedly sized and shaped. Some have documented them as 3 inches tall while others say that they are about 15 feet tall. In some places aliens have been documented as being shaped like balls of light, while in other places they have been shown as resembling robots or metal objects. Some believe that aliens look like animals or large insects while some think of aliens as human-like figures clothed in uniforms. Many believe that aliens can float through walls. There have been accounts of aliens abducting human beings. People have claimed t read more...

skepdic.com — ...despite the fact that we humans are great collectors of souvenirs, not one of these persons [claiming to have been aboard a flying saucer] has brought back so much as an extraterrestrial tool or artifact, which could, once and for all, resolve the UFO mystery." --Philip Klass "Aliens, if an when we find them, could be so alien, so different from humanity as to undermine the meaning of any exchange we might have, or even make such exchange impossible." --Henry Gee "Choose the nearest star; decide how long you're willing to travel, how fast you will need to go to get there in that time, what you will have to take with you, and how many should be in the crew. Make it a one-way suicide mission if you wish. As a final step, calculate the kinetic energy that must be imparted to the spaceship to get you there in that time (one half the mass times the velocity squared.) I suggest you stay away from the relativistic limit; it complicates the calculation and won't help you anyway. The good news is that you will then sleep secure in the knowledge that UFOs from elsewhere in the galaxy are not subjecting humans to hideous experiments." --Bob Park There is a widespread belief that alien beings have traveled to Earth from some other planet and are doing reproductive experiments on a chosen few. Despite the incredible nature of this belief and a lack of credible supportive evidence, a cult has grown up around it. According to a Gallup poll done at the end of the twentieth century, about one-third of Americans believe aliens have visited us, an increase of 5% over the previous decade. According to the tenets of this cult, aliens crashed at Roswell, New Mexico, in 1947. The U.S. Government recovered the alien craft and its occupants, and has been secretly meeting with aliens ever since in a place known as area 51. The rise in UFO sightings is due to the increase in alien activity on Earth. The aliens are abducting people in larger numbers, are leaving other signs of their presence in the form of so-called crop circles, are involved in cattle mutilation, and occasionally provide revelations such as the Urantia Book to selected prophets. The support for these beliefs about aliens and UFOs consists mostly of speculation, fantasy, fraud, and unjustified inferences from questionable evidence and testimony. UFO devotees are also convinced that there is a government and mass media conspiracy to cover up the alien activities, making it difficult for the read more...

buzzle.com — Apparently, the truth is still out there. During the 60th anniversary celebration of the infamous 1947 UFO crash landing at Area 51, visitors to Roswell, New Mexico might just find it. "The Roswell Incident", as it became known, occurred in July 1947, just outside the city limits. W.W. "Mack" Brazel, a local rancher, went out to check on his sheep and found some strange debris. When discussing his find with neighbors, several suggested that Brazel may have found pieces of a flyer saucer. Soon after, the Roswell Army Air Field (RAAF) issued a press release stating that pieces of a "crashed disk" were recovered nearby. The Roswell Daily Record ran a front page story claiming that a flying saucer had been captured. The story spread like wildfire. A second, revised release was soon sent out from RAAF, stating that the recovered material was a weather balloon, not a flying disk as had been previously reported. The controversy exploded, complete with suspicions of a government cover-up, and Roswell stepped into its role of Alien Capitol of the world. The Amazing Roswell UFO Festival and 60th Anniversary of the Roswell Incident will be held July 5-8, 2007. The four-day event will feature guest speakers, tours, live entertainment, authors, alien-related celebs, family-friendly activities, and perhaps even an alien abduction or two. The City of Roswell, which obviously takes pride in its celebrity, will be coordinating the annual festival. 2007 UFO Festival Committee is working alongside Roswell Mayor Sam LaGrone to create an event that will be entertaining to everyone – casual spectators and conspiracy theorists alike. "This year, we want the festival to be all-inclusive. We invite everyone with an interest in UFOs, aliens and outer space to be a part of the festival as a presenter, a guest, or both," said Mayor LaGrone. City officials predict 50,000 visitors to this year’s festival. In addition to the annual festival, Roswell is in the midst of planning a UFO-themed amusement park. The park, tentatively called "Alien Apex Resort", will contain an indoor rollercoaster that takes passengers on a simulated alien abduction. At least it’s supposed to be simulated. The privately managed park could open as early as 2010. For those who are wondering if the festival is right for them, the city's website should put their minds at ease. It says: "Roswell has something to offer all of our special visitors, whether from this planet, or from a distant galaxy. read more...

buzzle.com — Yuri Andropov, the former Soviet leader and long-time head of the KGB, had an acute personal interest in UFOs and ordered a 13-year programme that required every soldier in the military to monitor sightings over Russian territory, according to new revelations. Andropov shunned the splendour enjoyed by many Soviet leaders to live in a sparse flat throughout his 15 years as KGB chief and one year as Secretary-General of the Communist Party. Igor Sinitsin, who worked as an aide to Andropov in the Politburo for six years and has just written his memoirs, told The Observer that in 1977 he discovered that Andropov kept a file on the phenomena in his desk. At the time there had been fevered speculation in the Soviet Union about a large unidentified object in the skies over Petrozavosk on 20 September, 1977. Sinitsin, now 70, said that one of his responsibilities was to monitor the foreign press and he brought Andropov a Stern magazine piece about UFOs. 'I dictated a summary of the piece to my secretary and was sure to express some doubts, because you know how sceptical the mood was in Soviet times to such stories. I worried he would be concerned about my mental health, but I dared to hand the summary to him.' Sinitsin was shocked by the staid KGB chief's reaction. Andropov handed him the text of an official report he had ordered from the counter-espionage directorate. 'It described a UFO appearance in Astrakhan that an officer had seen while fishing.' Through Andropov's personal interest, in 1978 two committees were established to investigate UFOs, one military and one civilian. Andropov ordered four million Soviet soldiers to file detailed reports of incidents. Platov said the programme led to hundreds of thousands of sightings being recorded in the 13 years before it was abandoned with the break-up of the Soviet Union in 1990. Most cases had a 'rational explanation and were mainly linked to technical issues like missile launches'. read more...

buzzle.com — For four decades, residents of the tiny Pennsylvania town of Kecksburg have told their story of strange blue lights in the sky one winter's evening and a fireball crashing into woods. On 9 December, 1965, they say, they saw armed soldiers cordoning off the area and a large metallic acorn-shaped object bearing strange hieroglyphics driven off at speed on the back of a lorry. They talk of menacing plain-clothes officials visiting homes and warning local people not to tell anyone of what they saw. Until now the US government has denied that anything sinister took place. It has maintained that a thorough search of the woods by the air force, the only federal agency to have acknowledged it was there, found nothing. But now Nasa has been ordered to examine its X-Files to solve the mystery. Steve McConnell, Nasa's public liaison officer, has admitted two boxes of papers from the time of the Kecksburg incident are missing. The episode has parallels to the 1947 Roswell incident, when a UFO was said to have landed in New Mexico. 'For so many years, a lot of good people in Pennsylvania were told by their government that what they had to say was a lie or that they were hallucinating,' said Leslie Kean, a journalist who launched a lawsuit four years ago to force Nasa to open its archives. Washington judge Emmett Sullivan refused to accept Nasa's claim that the papers had been lost. He gave it until the end of the year to examine its records.
